Classic Legacy is a casual Magic The Gathering ("MTG") format created and managed by Lluís Cortès, Old School player from the Barcelona community, and that includes all legal sets in Legacy until Rise of the Eldrazi (April 2010), what he has considered the golden era of Legacy.
The format is eternal and limited, legal expansions do not rotate, which means that no new cards created by Wizards of the Coast ("WotC") enter to the format, and only modifications to the Ban List can generate changes in the card pool.
Although the format stops at a specific era of Legacy, there are aspects that make the gaming experience different from that experienced in the past:
The Ban List is different from the prohibit cards defined by WotC at that era.
The change in the legendary rule that was introduced in May 2013 modifies some play patterns of that era, such as eliminating enemy Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Umezawa's Jitte or Vendilion Clique.
The implementation of the London Mulligan rule, which improves combo decks but also sideboard cards that side-in on games 2 and 3.
Below you will find information about legal sets, ban list, rules and allowed cards, as well as resources and link of interest.
[Updated as of 01/20/2024]
As of today there are 60 cards on the ban list that you can find below. All cards with the "ante" mechanic are on the ban list, and then we find powerful cards in their own like Balance and Strip Mine; and others that could generate abusive combos such as Channel and Mind's Desire, as some examples.
The most significant change from the Ban List of that era is the banning of Vengenive in favor of keeping Survival of the Fittest in the format.
The Legacy format had the characteristic that, as an eternal format, the printing of new cards by WotC did not generate significant impacts. In general, new cards were incorporated into existing archetypes, and in cases where new ones were created, the meta could be adapted to these changes without obsolescence of existing staples.
For this reason, many of the decks playables in Classic Legacy have had certain variants with cards printed after Rise of the Eldrazi (April 2010) and that may be in the memory of players, competitive or casual, who have played in that era.
To get ahead of the questions like Can this card be played in the format?, below we detail a summary of the most significant cards that entered Legacy after the last set admitted in Classic Legacy, which makes THESE CARDS ARE NOT LEGAL:
Magic 2011 (M11): Grave Titan, Primeval Titan, Fauna Shaman.
Scars of Mirrodin (SOM): Sword of Body and Mind, Wurmcoil Engine, Necrotic Ooze, Ratchet Bomb.
Mirrodin Besieged (MBS): Sword of Feast and Famine, Blightsteel Colossus, Green Sun's Zenith.
New Phyrexia (NPH): Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, Phyrexian Metamorph, Birthing Pod, Mental Misstep, Dismember, Batterskull, Surgical Extraction, Gitaxian Probe.
Innistrad (ISD): Liliana of the Veil, Snapcaster Mage, Geist of Saint Traft, Past in Flames, Delver of Secrets.
Dark Ascension (DKA): Gravecrawler, Grafdigger's Cage, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Faithless Looting, Lingering Souls.
Avacyn Restored (AVR): Cavern of Souls, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Craterhoof Behemoth, Griselbrand, Terminus, Entreat the Angels.
Return to Ravnica (RTR): Cyclonic Rift, Deathrite Shaman, Abrupt Decay, Rest in Peace.
These are just some of the cards that had an impact on Legacy, but they are not playable in Classic Legacy. Although in the Argentog we appreciate certain cards from that era that feel us nostalgic (oh my dear Thalia, Guardian of Thraben), there are others that we consider have a design error and that their absence in the format is necessary for the balance of the game (yes, I'm talking about you Deathrite Shaman).
Despite the absence of these cards, Classic Legacy has a very large card pool that allows a large number of archetypes to exist. Below we share an article in StarCityGames with a guide about the decks that were played in that era: So Many Insane Plays – Your Complete Guide to Legacy: The 50 Decks of Legacy.
